Scoop: Santa Cruz Media Strategy Summit

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Mié, 01/30/2008 - 04:05

Across the weekend, Cynthia McKinney was in Santa Cruz across the weekend at the Media Strategy Summit, covered by the New Zealand Online Magazine, Scoop, in three parts.

During lunch on the third day, presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney and Bob Fritakis of freepress.org each spoke, firing up participants for the final stretch of the summit. “All of the hopes and dreams that we have for our country… depend on us working collectively,” McKinney said. “Can you imagine what a country we would have had with Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King as President and Vice President?”

“The new jackboots may be shinier, but that’s what they are,” said Fritakis, not shrinking from using the F-word to describe the current political situation in the US—fascist. “We are the ones at this moment in history who are recording what is actually happening.”

The major outcome of the summit was the formation of a national planning committee to work towards setting up a daily core newswire—not commentary—featuring national, world, regional, and local stories of such good quality that they will be picked up and used as broadly as is the information from traditional newswires such as AP and Reuters.

Cynthia Attends Oral Arguments in Appeal of Lynne Stewart's Conviction

Cynthia's Calendar - Mar, 01/29/2008 - 17:59
Start: 01/29/2008 - 14:00 End: 01/29/2008 - 15:00

USDC
500 Pearl Street
9th Floor North Ceremonial Courtroom
New York, NY
Oral arguments for the appeal.

Human rights attorney Lynne Stewart was falsely accused of helping terrorists. On Tuesday, April 9, 2002, she was arrested and agents searched her Manhattan law office. She was convicted and faces 30 years in prison. She is the only person ever convicted under the U.S. PATRIOT Act.

This is an obvious attempt by the U.S. government to silence dissent, curtail a vigorous defense for those accused of terrorism, and instill fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech and defend the rights of all oppressed people.

The 2d Circuit has adjourned oral argument until January 29, 2008, at 2 p.m. The reason is that the law clerks need to be cleared to review the materials the Court last week ordered produced with respect to the government's ex parte submissions regarding FISA and NSA.

Ishmael Reed: Going Old South On Obama: Ma And Pa Clinton Flog Uppity Black Man

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Sáb, 01/26/2008 - 08:06

In this essay, Ishmael Reed, author, poet and social commentator examines the race and gender politics of the current Democratic Primary contest, writes: "Many minority feminists, Asian-American, Hispanic, Native-American and African-American, contend that white middle and upper class feminists' insensitivity to the views and issues deemed important to them persists to this day." He comments at length on the long history of conflicts among feminists over racism within the movement and uses that to frame his observations on Gloria Steinam's recent New York Times column on the race. He also suggests that Cynthia's Green Party campaign could be the ultimate beneficiary of these long unresolved conflicts:

If Cynthia McKinney is nominated for president by the Green Party, a test for corporate feminists like Gloria Steinem, so concerned about the lack of opportunities for their black sisters, black voters will flock to McKinney by the thousands, which might tip the balance if the contest is close between Ms. Clinton and her Republican opponent. Others will leave the line for president on the ballot, blank. This rage against the Clintons will go unnoticed by the segregated old corporate media, which has more information about the landscape of Mars than trends in the Black, Asian-American and Hispanic communities. They rely upon their hand full of colored mind doubles, who tell them what they want to hear.

Democracy Now: Cynthia's work cited in story on: Corporations Reaping Millions as Congo Suffers Deadliest Conflict Since WW2

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Jue, 01/24/2008 - 01:34

*MAURICE CARNEY: *Right, a "civil war" is a misnomer. Congo has been invaded twice, first in 1996 primarily by Rwanda and Uganda, when they installed Kabila in power, and they did this with the backing of the United States. They could not have invaded the Congo without the backing of the United States, as Cynthia McKinney documented in her congressional hearing in 2001. Then, when Kabila did not serve the interests of the Rwandans and the Ugandans and the US, then he was gotten rid of. He was assassinated on January 16, 2001.

Davey D: Last Night's Presidential Debate Was Wack-Here's Why

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Mar, 01/22/2008 - 19:43

Davey D is a radio personality in Berkeley California. In this piece he describes in great detail the corporate lockdown on the scope of public debate. He writes: "The way it was framed is that it was a debate designed to force the candidates to talk specifically about key issues important to the African American community." He proceeds to describe the cynical exploitation by CNN and the Congressional Black Caucus of the King Holiday and the aspirations of a Black audience. But in the end, he had this to say about Ms. McKinney.

As Reverend Yearwood pointed out Barack isn't the only Black person running for President. Hillary isn't the only woman. We have *Cynthia McKinney* who is an African American woman who has been followed in the footsteps of the late *Shirley Chisolm* in the sense that she is *'Unbought and Unbossed'*... and while she may not get all the press attention that the others do within the mainstream, we can get behind someone like her if for any reason to force the mainstream folks to move closer to our issues.

The Pimping of Black America: Why Much of the Corporate Media Supports Barak Obama

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Jue, 01/17/2008 - 18:04

Cynthia McKinney has left the morally and politically bankrupt Democratic Party in favor of building and supporting a real grass roots coalition across this nation that is committed to attaining real power for and to the people. Nevertheless, don’t plan to ascertain much about her US Presidential campaign or the concomitant "Power To The People" coalition from the US corporate media, for this is not in their interest. You will, however, learn about Cynthia McKinney’s campaign and the "Power To The People" coalition over time, as the incessant whispers of every day people grow into the roars of active political coalition building. This is all about real empowerment: exposing, stopping, and ultimately systemically reversing the insidious gains made by the de facto war profiteers and their blood-soaked and greedy corporate partners. This is not about raising false “hopes” or “dreams.” This is about people collectively and actively struggling to take control from the corporate maggots of the military/industrial complex who profit from the deprivation and misery of the vast majority of people in this nation and on this planet.

Cynthia McKinney Attends American Blackout Showing in Ft. Lauderdale

Cynthia's Calendar - Jue, 01/17/2008 - 01:30
Start: 01/19/2008 - 18:00 End: 01/19/2008 - 21:00

Unfettered by corporate dollars, she can unapologetically, and without triangulation, be who she IS, and thereby serve past and future constituents in a way so reminiscent of real democracy, that many Americans today would not recognize it.

When she speaks of the future, she means OURS. When she speaks of "change," it involves us ALL.

She asks serious questions and does not question who she is nor what must be done to make America healthier, more secure and more responsible to its own citizens, to its neighbors, to its soul and to its destiny.

She is one of five people seeking the Green Party nomination for
President because there she can ask all those questions and more, and not be silenced nor cut from the debate.

Perhaps there is something to be learned here.

Come meet her this weekend as she appears at the screening of the film American Blackout at the Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale.

Congresswoman McKinney will be in the theater as well as in Ian Inaba's intelligent documentary which exposes years of fraudulent electoral practices that deny full citizenship to millions of Americans of color, and thus deny democracy to us all.

San Francisco Chronicle: Green Party holds presidential debate in San Francisco

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Mar, 01/15/2008 - 18:23

(01-13) 20:01 PST San Francisco -- Withdraw from Iraq immediately. Eliminate the No Child Left Behind law. Legalize marijuana.

Those were just some of the goals stated by candidates at the Green Party presidential debate Sunday in San Francisco.

About 800 people of varying ages, economic backgrounds and political parties attended the "Presidential Debate that Matters" at the Herbst Theatre, where the five Green presidential hopefuls spent more time agreeing with one another than actually debating.

"Please. This is serious. This is not a joke. This is about starting a real movement in this country," said candidate Cynthia McKinney to a standing ovation.

The former Democratic congresswoman from Georgia who converted to the Green Party last year was, at one point during the debate, acknowledged as the front-runner. The party's presidential nominee will be selected in July in Chicago.

The other three candidates included Jared Ball, a hip-hop scholar and assistant professor of communications at Morgan State University in Baltimore; Kat Swift, a 34-year-old dread-locked activist from San Antonio who said she will "be just old enough to be president by the time of the next election"; and actor and filmmaker Jesse Johnson from West Virginia.

The 2008 Green Party Presidential Debate: The only debate that matters

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Mar, 01/15/2008 - 17:51

Although McKinney only recently registered as a Green, she has been courted by the Green Party to run for president since 2004. We'll see how well she does in the primary, but judging by the debate alone, she appears to be a shoo-in for the California Green Party nomination. But if the 2004 election was any indication, the Green Party nominating process could be contentious, especially if Ralph Nader decides to enter the race. Again. (Golf claps).

Democracy Now: Green Party Holds Presidential Debate in California

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Mar, 01/15/2008 - 17:31

The Green Party held a presidential debate on Sunday before 800 people in San Francisco featuring former Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and four other candidates. Ralph Nader, who ran on the Green ticket in 2000, spoke at the event but did not take part in the debate. Nader has not yet announced whether he will run for president again.

. . .

Cynthia McKinney cited Ralph Nader as part of why she was running on the Green ticket.

Cynthia McKinney: Mr. Nader, in a recent piece, asked us to take the next step if we don’t like what’s happening in our country. I’ve heeded his advice: I’ve joined your party. I’m helping Green candidates, and I’m here with you today. I ask you to take the next step with me.

Larry Pinkney: Cynthia McKinney had the guts and integrity to leave the mire of the Democratic Party

All Things Cynthia McKinney - Vie, 01/11/2008 - 17:33

Black Commentator Editorial Board member, Larry Pinkney is a veteran of the Black Panther Party, the former Minister of Interior of the Republic of New Africa, a former political prisoner and the only American to have successfully self-authored his civil/political rights case to the United Nations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In this week's Keeping it Real column on Black Commentator, Double-Speak, Barak Obama and the Continuing U.S. Hypocrisy, he writes:

Ironically, the one serious candidate of the people who is outside of the joined-at-the-hip Democrat and Republican parties is former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who had the guts and integrity to leave the mire of the Democratic party and declare her support for the national “Power To The People Coalition,” which in turn supports her candidacy for US President. For this, she has been outright ignored and/or repeatedly attacked by the US corporate media. Much of America, collectively, even in the 21st century, simply cannot abide integrity, only hypocrisy. Nonetheless, real change and real power/empowerment must come not from cynical, corporate and shiny insubstantial rhetoric that is, in reality, callously pimping and manipulating the “hope” of people. Rather, it must come from systemic change that begins with the people - who are fed up with the machinations and hypocrisy of the Democrat and Republican parties. No matter what occurs in the upcoming and ongoing corporate media circuses referred to as caucuses and primaries throughout the United States, and no matter who the big corporate media presents as the so-called “front runners” in these circuses of, for, and by the Democrat and Republican parties, justice and integrity can never emanate from an intrinsically unjust, amoral and hypocritical US system. Moreover, when viewing the candidates of these parties, including the candidacy of Barack Obama, it behooves all of us to remember and apply the age-old African adage: “Beware of the naked man who offers you clothes.”
